Canal-side apartment in the Jordaan
Jordaan, Amsterdam
By ·Hannah Visser

The Jordaan is a former working-class district of narrow canals, hidden courtyards and independent galleries, now one of Amsterdam’s most charming addresses. Homes are small and sought after.
Low-rise 17th-century houses, hofjes (almshouse courtyards), brown cafes and weekly markets create a village atmosphere within the canal ring. Many homes are compact, with steep stairs and original beams.
The area is small enough to walk through, and trams on Rozengracht and Marnixstraat connect to Centraal station in under 15 minutes. Most residents cycle everywhere.
In 2026 the median sale price is about €640K, roughly €8,100 per square metre, and a typical 2-bedroom rental costs about €2,500 a month. Prices are up 3.5% on a year ago and homes take around 20 days to sell, which points to very strong demand.
Tourist foot traffic is heavy on the main streets, though side streets stay quiet. Erfpacht (leasehold) ground rent applies to many properties, so check the terms.
